If you are like me your friends are spread out all over the world, but that doesn’t mean you can’t buy them a drink for the holidays!
What I’ve concocted here is a moonshine-spiked hot chocolate. All the recipient of this gift has to do is stir the contents of the bottles into 8oz of hot almond milk. If the idea of spiked hot chocolate isn’t your thing, you can apply the same concept to so many other mixed drinks – as long as the ingredients in that drink have a long shelf life.
Either way, you’ll need to get your hands on some bottles. :)
Ingredients
- 1.5 Tablespoons Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
- 2 Teaspoons Sugar
- 1 oz of moonshine
- Half-a-dozen of your favorite marshmallows
Directions for you
- Sift together the cocoa powder and sugar and put it in a bottle.
- Put the moonshine in a bottle.
- Put the marshmallows in a bottle (don’t cram them in or they will get stuck in there).
- Tie the bottles together with string.
Directions for recipient
- Heat up 8oz of almond milk (or other milk or water).
- Stir the cocoa powder mix and moonshine into the hot milk.
- Sprinkle the marshmallows on top.
Dont forget to include the directions for the recipient in your card. =) My room is a mess. Don’t judge. Marshall is.

Darryl Moland - Absolutely stunning photography. I’d hire you in a minute if I still worked at a Food Magazine. Cat lover too!
Katie - I’m living in Peru right now, and they make this sugar cane moonshine that’s pretty gnarly, but damn is it delicious in hot chocolate! Thanks for the idea :)
Melissa - Love this gift idea and your portfolio – swoon. PS – I heart my fat orange cat too.
Mónica - Love the idea, the bottles and the photos. And your cat is so cute.

Susanne - Vanessa, this reminds me of the words we had engraved in our wedding rings: “in the moonshine”, were I got my wedding proposal. So romantic!! And such a lovely idea for a gift: your moonshine spiked chocolate! Cheers Susanne

vkrees - Ashlae- I AM in Brooklyn. But, sadly, I will not be in Brooklyn on those days. I’m going to my sister’s house in Virginia for Christmas. =( Next time!
Ashlae - I like your style. And HEY! Aren’t you in Brooklyn? I’m coming to NYC from 24-29 Dec. And I think it’d be pretty rad if we met up.
vkrees - Farwin- Thank you! I use diffusions to block out light in certain areas of the photos. I think I used a transparent piece of fabric to bloc out the light on the cup. Hope that helps! =)
Farwin - Hi Vanessa,Love your gorgeous photographs. Is it side lighting you’re using in the photos? How do you avoid the highlights in the mug?
Anna - What a clever idea! I have friends all over the globe too…Thanks for sharing this post! By the way your pictures are amazing!
